Dry Eye Treatment

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is a treatment that uses pulsed flashes of light to help relieve dry eyes. E-Eye is a medical device that has been specifically designed for treating dry eye syndrome due to meibomian gland dysfunction. The energy, spectrum and time period are precisely set to stimulate the Meibomian glands in order for them to return their normal function. E-Eye is the medical solution to treat and to prevent dry eyes.

IPL has been shown to improve tear quality, minimise debilitating dry eye symptoms and slow the progression of chronic dry eye. In addition, it can help to improve patient outcomes of vision correction procedures such as laser and cataract eye surgeries.

How is IPL performed?

During the treatment, a special device emits 5 quick pulses of light onto the skin around your eyes. It’s usually a comfortable process and can lead to longer-lasting relief from dry eye symptoms. Overall, IPL is a helpful option for many people struggling with dry eyes.

Who can benefit from this dry eye treatment?

Many people can benefit from the IPL treatment except those with darker skin tones due to the risk of discolouration of the skin, active infections, skin tumors, moles or tattoos around the eyes, history of keloids, immune system or coagulation disorders, when usingantic oagulants and in pregnancy. Caution is advised for patients with a history of herpes simplex near the treatment area. A full dry eye assessment will determine suitability.

How many treatment sessions are required?

The procedure takes minutes and for optimal results 4 sessions are recommended and separated by 2-3 weeks. During the course of the treatment, you can continue managing your symptoms with eyedrops, although you may notice an improvement as early as a few hours after the first treatment session. A top-up treatment is usually recommended every 9-12months.

What are the risks?

The IPL treatment is safe and well tolerated by the patients. The eyes are protected with goggles or disposable eye patches. Patients are recommended to avoid sun exposure and use suncream when outside for a few weeks before and after the IPL treatment.
